Smart board

SMART Board
SMART Board is a series of interactive whiteboards developed by SMART Technologies. The first SMART Board interactive whiteboard was introduced in 1991. As of January 2010, SMART Board interactive whiteboards lead the interactive whiteboard category with a 60.9% share in the United States, 63.5% in the UK, 61.8% in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), 77.9% in Canada and 48.2% market share globally .
Advantage of the Smart board:
Join millions of students and teachers around the world who use the SMART Board interactive whiteboard to help improve learning outcomes. Combining the simplicity of a whiteboard with the power of a computer, the SMART Board interactive whiteboard lets you deliver dynamic lessons, write notes in digital ink, and save your work – all with the simple touch of a finger.
The interactive nature of the SMART Board provides many practical uses for the classroom. Using SMART Notebook software, teachers can record each step of a lesson activity for students to review at a later time.
In Datacloud: Toward a New Theory of Online Work, Johndan Johnson-Eilola describes a specific computer-supported space for collaboration: the SMART Board.  He makes three distinct claims regarding the functionality of the technology: 1) the SMART Board allows users to work with large amounts of information, 2) it offers an information space that invites active collaboration, and 3) the work produced is often “dynamic and contingent”.
Johnson-Eilola further explains that with the SMART Board “information work becomes a bodied experience. Users have the opportunity to engage with the technology by direct manipulation. Moreover, this space allows for more than one user; essentially, it invites multiple users.

The Disadvantages of a Smart Board:

Smart Boards, a popular brand of interactive white boards, are popping up in many educational settings, and while some teachers sing their praises, others are frustrated with some of their disadvantages. While Smart Boards are a widely used technology in the modern classroom, these interactive white boards do have some disadvantages:

1.                 Training Required: Most teachers need to be trained before they're ready to incorporate Smart Board technologies into their classroom lesson plans.

2.                     Maintenance: According to "SMART Boards in the Classroom: The Influence of Interactive Boards in Education," because they're pieces of electronic equipment, Smart Boards require maintenance to make sure they're running appropriately.

3.                     Installation: Smart Boards take work to install. Usually, they have to be installed by a computer or technology specialist, and if a district doesn't have these on staff, they can be expensive to hire and might not be available when they're needed

4.                     Cost: Smart Boards cost a considerable amount of money, and this can be a problem for school districts that are already low on funds or for smaller or rural districts.
